Josephine Anderson


Josephine Anderson is an award-winning filmmaker based in Vancouver, Canada, who works across documentary and interactive modes to address themes like conformity, deviance, aging, and female experience.

Josephine’s latest documentary, On Falling, was selected for Tribeca Film Festival 2020, in competition for best short documentary (World Premiere) and was later distributed by The New Yorker Documentary and selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick. It won the prizes for Best Documentary Short and Best Editing at Vancouver International Women in Film Festival 2021, Vimeo Staff Pick Award at Mountainfilm 2021, and Best Mountain Culture Film at Whistler Film Festival 2020, and was nominated for three 2021 Leo Awards.

Her previous short films have screened at festivals internationally, on television and online, with support from the Canada Council, CBC, and National Film Board of Canada. Her interactive documentary, The Sticking Place, was recognized as an official Webby Award Honoree, won two Pixel Awards, and was nominated for a Digi Award, before being selected for the IDFA DocLab digital platform. 

Josephine is a member of the Directors Guild of Canada. She is an alumna of Berlinale Talent Campus and the Canadian Film Centre, where she was a resident with the NFB/CFC Creative Doc Lab. Josephine holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of British Columbia, and is a graduate of Capilano University’s documentary production program, where she was honoured with the One to Watch alumni award. She served for four years on the Board of Directors for the Documentary Organization of Canada.

Josephine is currently developing several short, long form, and 360 VR documentary projects.
