Speaker V.T. Nayani


V. T. Nayani (pron. nine-knee) is a Tamil director, producer, and writer, born and raised in Toronto. Her work intimately and tenderly explores how we continuously come of age, at every stage of life. V. T. is an alumna of the CBC's Workshop for Diverse Creators, HotDocs' Doc Accelerator, Reelworld Film Festival's Emerging 20 Program, and BlackStar Film Festival's William and Louise Greaves Filmmaker Seminar. She is also a recipient of the UN Women Yvonne M. Hebert Award for filmmakers and photographers. Most recently, she became an alumna of the Canadian Film Centre's Directors' Lab (21), the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television's Directors Program for Women (22) and BIPOC TV & Film's Showrunner Bootcamp (22). During her career, V. T. has been championed by platforms including Telefilm Canada, The Gotham, CBC Films, Netflix, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, RBC, and L'Oréal Paris. Her work has also been supported by festivals including TIFF Next Wave, Women of the World, Women Deliver, Toronto Reel Asian International, Inside Out, Breakthroughs, Regent Park, and Zanzibar International. THIS PLACE, her long-awaited feature directorial debut, recently had its World Premiere in the Discovery section at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
